Through presentations of historical fact and dramatic re-enactment, this series traces Canadian history from the arrival of the first peoples to the end of the twentieth century. The second hour of this opening episode reveals the first encounters between the Aboriginal people and the Europeans. Segment one considers the events which occurred with John Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland in 1497, the importance of cod fishing to the Europeans, Cabot's disastrous second voyages, and the fate of 50 native people who were brought to Lisbon as slaves in 1500. Segment two depicts Jacques Cartier's explorations of North America in 1534, his meeting with Chief Donnacona of the Stadacona people, and how the Chief's two sons came to return to France with Cartier. Segment three has Cartier returning to Canada with Donnacona's two sons who guide him to their village of Stadacona and the settlement of Hochelaga. With help from the Chief's sons, Cartier and many of his men a survive a winter for which they are ill-equipped. Segment four depicts Cartier's plot to kidnap Chief Donnacona and his sons whom he takes to France. It is here that Chief Donnacona dies. Segment five depicts the ill-fated 1610 voyage of Henry Hudson to locate the Northwest Passage aboard his ship The Discovery. Segment six looks at how Captain James Cook's 18th century search for the outlet to the Northwest Passage led to his discovery of the west coast village of Nootka and how his men treated the inhabitants they found there. Segment seven tells the story of how John Jewitt sails into Nootka Sound aboard the trade ship Boston in1803 and becomes the captive of Nootka Chief Maquinna. Segment eight relates Jewitt's experiences as captive and reluctant friend of Maquinna as well as how after more than two years, his release is engineered by sailors aboard the American ship Boston.
